There are guidebooks that stay put, and then there are those that grow with the walk. Not only because they update tracks, places, variants. But because they welcome the transformations of a living territory, the relationships that have become intertwined over time, the faces that have begun to be part of it.
The new edition of the guidebook of the Cammino di San Nilo, which has just been published by Terre di mezzo, was born from this movement: from the need to recount not only a physical route, but an experience that has expanded, enriched, and become even more rooted in the places and communities that inhabit it.
Eight days on foot, through woods, water and silence
Those who have already traveled these 100 kilometers in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park know that it is not just a crossing. It is a crossing. Of the landscape, certainly, but also of time, of memory, of oneself.
Eight stages lead the wayfarer from the sea at Sapri to the clear waters of Palinuro, passing through beech forests, rocky heights, wild valleys, hidden hermitages and villages that guard ancient gestures. The path follows the footsteps of St. Nilus of Rossano, a 10th-century Ithalogrean monk who left everything behind to devote himself to the contemplative life. But it also follows the more discreet traces of those who keep this path alive today: hospitable communities, artisans, farmers, young storytellers of the area.
Stories surfacing along the way
The guidebook – like the Camino itself – offers more than just directions. It tells. Stage after stage, one encounters true stories: like that of Maria, a broom artisan in Tortorella, or sisters Clorinda and Modestina, who patiently collected the ethnographic memory of Morigerati. And again, Jepis, who from Caselle in Pittari gave birth to “CiPassi“, an experiment in collective storytelling on the road.
It is these stories, sewn between a map and an elevation description, that make the guidebook something more. A tool, yes. But also a traveling companion.

The heart of the project, in the words of the author
Behind every guidebook there is a look. That of Settimio Rienzo, author of the guidebook and founder of the project Cammini Bizantini, is a long, patient look, capable of capturing the deep breath of a territory and those who pass through it.
“In this second edition there are more alternatives, so more possibilities for walkers,” Rienzo says. More miles of trails, more hamlets involved, more opportunities to connect with the land. It is a path that becomes more and more inclusive. And that, for me, is the heart of a project like this: not just making people walk, but regenerating territories, creating opportunities, weaving relationships. This is the real step forward that we wanted to tell about “.
It is an idea of a path that is not exhausted in movement, but is measured in care. In the possibility that a path traced through the woods can generate listening, rediscovery, relationships.
A guide that accompanies, not just orients
Compared to the first edition, this new guidebook is enriched with updated details, route variants, new points of interest and suggestions for those who want to experience just a section of the Camino. The “Taste of the Camino” section offers short itineraries for those who have little time but still want to be touched by the spirit of the journey.
In addition, a final QR code invites each wayfarer to leave a trace of their experience. A collective map in the making, an archive on the way that is built step by step through the stories of those who cross these places with respect and wonder.
It is a guide designed to be useful, sure. But above all to be read at the right pace. The slow, careful one, able to stop and observe a rock church, an old wall, a voice telling from a threshold.

The path continues. And the guide, with him
Because every step, every encounter, every stop is part of something that grows and is renewed.
Just like this guidebook, which is not a point of arrival, but a new invitation to leave.
