The communities

Who inhabits the places along the way

The villages crossed by the Byzantine Paths are not just stops.
They are lived-in places, where walking is part of daily life, even when it’s not called that. The communities that inhabit these territories know the trails, the changes of seasons, the steepest roads, and those that lead to water.

Each village is a point of “encounter between those who walk and those who stay.
Those passing through can recognize this presence in a word offered unhurriedly, in an open church, in a well-maintained fountain, or in a wall repaired after the” winter.
It’s not just about hospitality: it’s a form of silent participation, which holds together landscape and daily life.

In the heart of the Mediterranean, this territory extends between three large national parks — the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, the Pollino National Park, and the Appennino Lucano National Park — forming the largest protected natural area in Southern Europe.
A network of villages and landscapes that preserves an exceptional heritage of biodiversity, traditions, and memories.

The presence of Italo-Greek monks has left a legacy that can still be seen today in names, gestures, and minor architectural features.
It’s a trace encountered in places, but also in people: the communities are living custodians of a history that has not been interrupted, made of simple spirituality, local knowledge, and care for the territory.

Walking in these territories is also this: listening to stories, sharing silences, recognizing the discreet wisdom of those who stay.
Without these communities, the journey would be just a route.
With them, it becomes an experience.
