Description

The Greek saprós, ‘putrid’, ‘rotten’, in the etymology of the place name would refer to the orographic reality of the place, an alluvial plain that opened into marshy and unhealthy lands at sea level, close to the ancient port area – already active in ancient times, and then during the Byzantine Middle Ages as a strategic docking point for controlling the Lucanian interior –.
Human settlements occupied the edges of the hilly belt surrounding the inlet, which was once more pronounced.
It is believed that Emperor Maximian Herculius – father-in-law of Constantine the Great, who had married his daughter Fausta Maxima Flavia, and father of Constantine’s rival Maxentius – chose to live here when he left power in 305 along with his colleague Diocletian, to retire in Lucania in an opulent villa, which would be identified with the Roman remains present in the locality of Santa Croce, below the Fortino.
The design stylizes a territory characterized by stagnant waters and decomposing materials.
