From Casaletto Spartano to Morigerati: Between Water Trails and Stone Villages
The journey resumes from Casaletto Spartano, following the path of the Sentiero della Valle della Lontra, among waterfalls, streams, and ancient passages in the heart of Cilento Park. After crossing the bridge over the Rio Bussentino, the trail ascends towards Tortorella, a perched medieval village, guardian of silence and memory.
Tortorella deserves a stop: its stone streets, compact architecture, and open view of the valley tell of a time that is in no hurry. Leaving the village, the path continues with alternating climbs and descents, slipping into a gorge carved by water.
You cross the Gerdenaso stream, then enter the Farneto forest, among turkey oaks, holm oaks, cyclamens, and shady paths accompanied by wooden panels describing the flora and fauna. A natural viewpoint precedes the descent towards the valley floor.
There, immersed in greenery and the sound of water, you encounter a well-preserved medieval bridge: a crossing point but also an ideal place for a short detour to the river. A small path leads to a tranquil clearing, perfect for a rejuvenating break.
Morigerati, discreet and compact, awaits at the end of the route with its Church of San Demetrio, the Ethnographic Museum, and especially the “access to” the WWF Grotte del Bussento Oasis: a precious nature reserve where the river disappears underground among caves and lush vegetation.
It’s a short stage, but rich. Every step crosses living nature, ancient history, and untouched beauty.
Passage Notes
- Among the most spectacular stages of the entire Cammino, this section leads along the Rio Bussentino, crosses the medieval village of Tortorella, the Farneto forest, and a well-preserved ancient bridge, before reaching Morigerati and its famous WWF Grotte del Bussento Oasis.
- Although short, the stage presents continuous ups and downs and technical sections: it is not recommended to combine it with the next one, to calmly appreciate its wild beauty.
- The route develops entirely within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, in an environment rich in biodiversity.
- Along the way, there are some fountains and equipped areas, but it is always advisable to start well-supplied.
- In Tortorella, it is possible to take a break or stay overnight.
- Morigerati offers accommodation, basic services, and the possibility to visit the oasis.
