From Torraca to Casaletto Spartano: ups and downs, silence and living waters

The second stage of Cammino di San Nilo begins among the streets of Torraca, then slowly leaves the village and enters an increasingly wild landscape. It immediately climbs towards the slopes of Mount Grottillone, following a mixed route of asphalt and trail that offers wide views of the Gulf of Policastro and the inland valleys. The terrain becomes rugged, the light more intense: Cilento shows itself here in its roughest and most sincere form.

The initial effort is compensated by the passage between rural structures and rocky walls, where the path wedges between limestone outcrops, witnesses of a long geological history. After passing a go-kart track (an isolated sign of human presence), you reach the area of Le Caselle, an ancient nucleus of shepherds, now inhabited by few families but still a resting place for wanderers.

Here the path returns to dirt road, immersing itself in a softer and more silent nature: stretches enclosed between dry stone walls, oaks, ferns, streams. The ancient trace of the mule tracks becomes evident, and one moves among small signs of the past: a stable, a chapel, a watering place, the remains of a wall.

The climb resumes up to the hamlet of Battaglia, a small village immersed in greenery, marked by a history of agricultural work and religious memory. Here you can find the church of Santa Maria della Stella, simple and intimate, and a baronial palace that dominates the landscape. Battaglia is an ideal place for a stop: time seems to slow down among the stone houses and the fresh air of the valley.

From here the journey changes rhythm: a long and panoramic descent begins towards the valley floor, where the Bussentino river flows. The path becomes more wild and enchanting, following the watercourse through the Valle della Lontra, a small jewel hidden among rocks, mosses, stone bridges and waterfalls.

The last stretch coincides with the path that leads to the Capelli di Venere Oasis, one of the most famous naturalistic destinations in Cilento. Here the water flows clear, framed by ferns and lush vegetation, creating a cool and refreshing environment, perfect for a break. The presence of an equipped area with tables and wooden houses makes the oasis a particularly welcoming place.

A few minutes separate the “oasis from the center of Casaletto Spartano, where the stage ends: a small village nestled in the valley, where stone, greenery and the sound of” water coexist in harmony.

Journey Coordinates

A physically demanding stage, with continuous ups and downs, technical sections and long crossings on mixed trails. It is recommended for those who have a minimum of training and familiarity with walking in hilly and wooded environments.
The route crosses for the first time a portion of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, offering views and environments of great naturalistic value.
In some points you encounter pasture gates: these are municipal roads, it is sufficient to open them and close them carefully after passing.
Along the route there are several points suitable for resting or overnight stays, among rural villages, small hamlets and equipped areas immersed in nature.
The last stretch follows part of the Valle della Lontra Trail, which develops in the next stage.
The arrival at Casaletto Spartano marks the end of the stage: the village offers all the main services.
