Torraca
A village balanced between silence and vision
Perched at an altitude of 428 meters, Torraca is the first village that welcomes the wanderer along the Cammino di San Nilo. It is reached after a steady climb from Sapri, through paths of Mediterranean scrub and silent woods: a route that prepares you for the secluded atmosphere of the hamlet.
Small and discreet, Torraca surprises with the way it combines memory and vision. Its stone streets, houses leaning against each other, and dominant position over the valley testify to a long history of garrison and defense. During the War of the Vespers, in fact, it was one of the main Angevin fortresses between the coast and the hinterland.
The heart of the village is marked by the presence of the Palamolla Baronial Castle, which dominates the historic center and tells of centuries of transformations. Today it is owned by the municipality and is the subject of a restoration project.
But Torraca doesn’t live on the past alone: it was the first Italian municipality to adopt LED public lighting, becoming a symbol of sustainable innovation. A concrete gesture that expresses the “balance between care for the territory and openness to the future.
A Spiritual Presence
Just before arriving in the village, a short detour leads to the remains of the church of San Fantino, one of the most significant places of the entire Path. According to tradition, San Fantino, the spiritual master of San Nilo, lived and worked here. The church is a simple hall with three apses (today only the central one remains), without a roof, immersed in greenery and charged with a silent spirituality.
It is located on private property, but is freely visitable thanks to the availability of the owners, who have been carefully preserving it for years.
