A Devotion that Spans Time
The name of the village is linked to the cult of Saint Mauro Abate, a reference figure for the entire community. Religious festivals and processions keep alive a simple faith, passed down from generation to generation.
In the surroundings, there are paths and traces of ancient spirituality, often connected to the presence of Italo-Greek monks who inhabited these lands between the 9th and 13th centuries, leaving marks in place names and customs.
Just 2 km from the center is San Nazario, a hamlet of the municipality and a place of extraordinary historical and spiritual value. Here stood the “ancient monastery of San Nazario, considered the cradle of the Nilan Congregation and one of the most important Italo-Greek cenobies in the” entire Cilento. According to the Life of Saint Nilus the Younger, it was in this monastery that, around 940, Nicholas of Rossano received the “monastic habit, beginning the journey that would lead him to found the” Abbey of Grottaferrata.
