Rofrano
A village suspended between sky, forests, and devotion
Located at over 800 meters above sea level, Rofrano is the highest village crossed by Cammino di San Nilo. Immersed in a natural setting of extraordinary beauty, amidst beech and chestnut woods, the village appears as a balcony overlooking the inner Cilento, in constant dialogue with the mountain and the sky.
It is reached after leaving Montano Antilia and passing one of the most meditative stretches of the journey. The path leading to Rofrano makes its way through rural areas, deep silences, and landscape openings that invite contemplation. Arriving here means climbing, but also pausing: it is one of the stages that most evoke a sense of search and reflection.
Popular Faith and Byzantine Roots
The spiritual heart of the village is tied to the devotion to the Madonna of Grottaferrata, to whom an important sanctuary just outside the town center is dedicated. This is no coincidence: according to tradition, St. Nilus was welcomed and guided by the community of Rofrano on his journey to Grottaferrata, where he founded the famous abbey. This memory is still alive in the celebrations and oral stories passed down in the village.
Rofrano preserves evident traces of Byzantine spirituality in its place names, places of worship, and the very structure of the historic center. The stone alleys, fountains, ancient portals, and views over the valleys make this village a place where past and present coexist quietly.
A Path that Opens Up
From Rofrano, two roads open up: one continues towards San Nazario, following the most traveled route of Cammino di San Nilo, the other extends further south, touching some stretches that still recall the paths used by pilgrims and monks. It’s a junction point, but also a resting place, where one’s pace can slow down to listen, orient oneself, and recharge.
