Laurito
A village among woods and memories, along the ascent
Laurito is located in a secluded position, nestled along the wooded slopes that rise from Morigerati towards the plateau. Its name could derive from the presence of laurels and aromatic plants that grow spontaneously in the surroundings.
It’s a discreet village, overlooking the valley, where the journey slows down and catches its breath, among chestnut groves, vegetable gardens, and small orthodox balances with nature.
In the journey of Cammino di San Nilo, Laurito represents an important passage: not only physical, but also symbolic. After the wild beauty of Morigerati and the descent along the Bussento, here we climb back up and return inland, crossing one of the most silent and authentic territories of lower Cilento.
Among Chestnuts, Rituals, and Spirituality
The village retains a rural and sincere imprint, made of simple architectures, stone streets, small altars, and cultivated terraces. Its history is linked to pastoral routes and agricultural rhythms, but also to a deep sense of the sacred that manifests itself in popular rites and traditions.
One of the peculiarities of Laurito is the still alive presence of Byzantine spirituality: in the dialect, in place names, in daily gestures, one perceives a “heritage that sinks into time.
It’s a place that invites to stop rather than to pass through, where time seems to bend to slowness and” observation.
Laurito is also a gateway to the wooded stretch leading towards Montano Antilia, crossing centuries-old chestnut groves and paths beaten by shepherds and gatherers. A landscape that accompanies the wanderer with a silent and constant presence, made of wind among the trees and traces of daily life.
