From Morigerati to Caselle in Pittari: Among Silences, Memories, and Highland Visions
The fourth stage begins with the “echo of” water still in your ears. Morigerati slowly fades behind, among stone houses and paths leading to the valley floor. Those who “haven’t yet can visit the” WWF Oasis Grotte del Bussento before setting off again.
You descend along Via Bucceri, then enter a stepped path that crosses through lush vegetation. A suspended wooden bridge allows you to cross the river, just before the old mill, now disused but still full of memories. From here begins the ascent: steep but steady, leading to the hamlet of Sicilì.
The landscape changes, opens up: among scattered houses, dry stone walls and olive groves, you walk accompanied by the scent of the earth and the view of the hills that mark the horizon. Sicilì welcomes you with its church of Madonna dei Martiri, a spiritual reference point for the community and an excellent rest stop for those in need of a break.
The journey continues on dirt roads and then on mule tracks, between stone sections and packed earth. With a slight detour, you reach Mount Pittari, where the Hermitage of San Michele stands, nestled in the rock, surrounded by forest and silence. The entrance is simple, but the interior is striking: stone altars, votive statues, frescoes, and signs left by generations of faithful. It’s one of the symbolic places of the Walk, where spirituality merges with nature.
From the hermitage, you return to the main path and begin to descend towards the valley, crossing paths immersed in greenery and old stone staircases. This section still follows the route of the procession of San Michele, which every year crosses the territory connecting communities.
The entrance to Caselle in Pittari happens slowly, along roads that climb between cultivated fields, signs of living and ancient rurality. The town sits on a small plateau and develops around a medieval tower and the mother church. But Caselle is also a village that looks to the future: here is the Bottega di Jepis, a place of storytelling and community, and every summer the Palio del Grano is celebrated, one of the most significant agricultural and cultural rituals of the area.
A dense stage that combines spirituality, landscape, and culture. A section that invites you to walk with a broad gaze and an open heart.

- The stage develops between accentuated elevation changes and constant uphill sections, but without particular technical difficulties.
- There are no water sources along the route: refill carefully at the start.
- The climb to the Hermitage of San Michele (slightly off the main path) is recommended for those who wish to experience a moment of reflection or discover one of the symbolic places of the Walk.
- Sicilì can be a good intermediate stop for refreshment.
