A journey through history, spirituality, and sustainability
The Cammini Bizantini project was born as an integrated local development initiative, promoted by the “Cultural Association Gazània APS, to enhance the inland areas of the” Lucanian Apennines through slow mobility routes. This project interweaves historical research, spirituality, and connection with nature, building itineraries that link villages, monasteries, and hermitages, witnesses of a thousand-year history marked by Byzantine monasticism.
The first route is the Cammino di San Nilo, located in the heart of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park, a unique experience that combines unspoiled landscapes, cultural traditions, and deep spirituality.
The Bussento – Lambro and Mingardo Mountain Community has played a fundamental role in the development and promotion of Cammino di San Nilo, contributing to transform it into a key resource for sustainable and cultural tourism in lower Cilento. With a vision oriented towards Green Community, the mountain authority has launched strategies to enhance the territory’s potential in terms of environmental sustainability, economic development, and social cohesion.
This territory, “to be visited at a slow pace”, is one of the most evocative corners of the Campania Region, capable of surprising with rapidly changing landscapes: from rocky panoramas of oaks and holm oaks to rugged and crystalline coasts. Every turn reveals new perspectives, passing from hills perched on picturesque villages to hidden coves and clear sea. Here, the community plays a fundamental role in making every experience unique, offering visitors hospitality, traditions, and authentic flavors.
Thanks to the “Cilento Outdoor” project, funded by the Ministry of Tourism, the Mountain Community has carried out significant interventions on Cammino di San Nilo, improving its “infrastructure, signage, and safety, as well as promoting targeted territorial marketing actions. The Way has thus become a reference point for slow and spiritual tourism, offering an” experience tailored to “human needs and respectful of the” environment.
A shared vision for the future
The Cammino di San Nilo is much more than a simple route: it represents a concrete example of a participatory network, capable of uniting entities, associations, local communities, and individual citizens in a project of sustainable territorial enhancement.
The collaboration between the “Gazània Association, the Mountain Community, and the National Park has allowed for the construction of a virtuous model of responsible tourism, capable of combining respect for the” environment, economic growth, and cultural promotion.
In view of the 2025 Jubilee year, Cammino di San Nilo is a candidate to become one of the main destinations for pilgrimage and experiential tourism in the Mediterranean.
Through the Cammini Bizantini, Cilento reaffirms its identity as a crossroads of cultures and traditions, offering visitors an authentic and regenerating experience, among history, spirituality, and unforgettable landscapes.
