From Sapri to Torraca: the first step between sea, silence, and memory
The first stage of the Cammino di San Nilo opens in the heart of Sapri, a pearl of the Gulf of Policastro, an ancient port city with Roman and Byzantine past.
Leaving the station, you venture into the historic alleys and elegant squares of the town, crossing the fishermen’s quarter, La Marinella, until reaching the first dirt paths. The sea remains behind, but continues to accompany the journey with its silent presence.
The first kilometers, in constant ascent, wind through centuries-old olive groves and Mediterranean scrub, offering wide and bright views of the coast.
The route partially crosses the area traversed in 1857 by Carlo Pisacane and his Three Hundred: a historical detail that adds depth to an already evocative landscape.
After about five kilometers, you reach Mangosa, where a municipal shelter immersed in greenery offers respite to the wanderer. From here, the path continues through cooler and more wooded environments, crossing valleys, clearings, pools of water, and flat stretches where grazing animals are often encountered.
Just before arriving in Torraca, “a detour leads to the remains of the Church of San Fantino, the spiritual master of Saint Nilus: a small early medieval construction, now bare and immersed in vegetation, which preserves an” intact aura of contemplation and spirituality.
Torraca, perched at 428 meters “above sea level, reveals itself slowly, offering the wanderer a landscape of tranquility and stone. Its Baronial Castle Palamolla, the flowery alleys, and the Church of San Pietro Apostolo tell an ancient story, but the village also looks to the future: it was the first Italian municipality to adopt LED public lighting, a concrete trace of innovation and attention to the” environment.
This first stage represents much more than a physical journey: it is the symbolic passage from a habitual world to an inner one, made of listening, slowness, and immersion. An invitation to enter the rhythm of the walk.
Travel Premises
- The stage measures 10.1 km and presents a significant uphill elevation gain.
- There are no water sources along the route: it is essential to start well-equipped.
- The first stretch (about 2.5 km) is particularly exposed: it is advisable to start early, especially in the summer months.
- In the winter months, it is recommended to carefully consider the daylight hours to avoid arriving in Torraca after dark.
- The route is not yet within the Cilento National Park, but crosses the so-called adjacent area (buffer zone): a transition zone that offers a preview of the environmental richness of the territory. The first part of the path winds through an open landscape, among olive trees and Mediterranean scrub; the second enters wooded environments, cooler and shadier.
- Additional route: if you have time and desire, you can also explore the “Apprezzami l’asino” trail, which starts from the port of Sapri and follows the coast to the Mezzanotte canal, at the border with Maratea. It is one of the most scenic routes in the Gulf of Policastro (about 10 km round trip).
